About the Temple:

One of the 108 Divya Desams, Sri Gajendra Varadha Raja Perumal Temple at Kapisthalam is located just over 10 km from Kumbakonam on the Thiruvayaru road (about 5 km East of Koodalur or Aduthurai Divya Desam). This temple is among the Pancha Krishna Kshetrams (the other four being ThiruKannapuram, ThiruKannamangai, Thiruvazhandur and ThiruKannangudi). The presiding deity is called Gajendra Varadhar in a reclining posture (bhujanga sayanam) facing east. He is also called Kannan and Adimoola Perumal. The goddess Ramaamanivalli thayar (also known as Senbagavalli and Potraamaraiyal) has a separate sannadhi. Other sannadhis are there for SanthanaKrishnan and Andal. The temple pond is Gajendra Pushkarini or Kapila Theertham. The vimanam is called Gaganaaruti vimanam. The major festival is Gajendra Moksham utsavam (celebrating the liberation of the elephant Gajendran from the clutches of the crocodile (mudala)) celebrated during the Tamil month of Panguni (mid-March-mid-April). Other festivals are Vaikasi visakam and Vaikunta Ekadasi.

Thirumazhisai Azhwar’s only one pasuram for this kshetram is as follows:

கூற்றமும் சாரா கொடுவினையும் சாரா தீ
மாற்றமும் சாரா வகையறிந்தேன் – ஆற்றங்
கரைக்கிடக்கும் கண்ணன் கடல்கிடக்கும் மாயன்
உரைக்கிடக்கும் உள்ளத்து எனக்கு – திருமழிசையாழ்வார்
