Durmukhi Aani Kettai(20th June 2016) Pournami purappadu took place for Varadan and His Consorts at Kanchi Varadaraja Perumal koil. Purappadu for Varadan takes place on the ‘pancha parvas’. Pancha parvam refers to amavasyai (new moon), pournami (full moon), masapurappu (the starting day of the Tamil months) sukla paksa ekadashi and krishnapaksha ekadashi. These are important days in the spiritual calendar when special pujas or fasts are observed.
To emphasise their importance Varadan descends from Atthigiri and blesses devotees. Pournami tirumanjanam took place at ‘kanadi-arai’ mandapam at about 9.30 a.m. Evening purappadu took place at about 6.00p.m. After stopping at swami Desikan sannidhi and presenting His garland and Srisathari, the procession moved along sannidhi street accepting the offerings of fruits, flowers and sugarcandies. The Vedic notes of the ‘Vedaparayana goshti’ filled the atmosphere with auspiciousness. After reaching ‘Tiruvadi-koil’ Varadan along with ubhayanachimars entered the temple where puja took place and Hanuman was blessed with Perumal’s ‘srisathari’. Theertham and Srisathari blessing were given to the devotees. After coming out divyaprabhandam started. After entering ‘gopura vasal’ ‘pathi-ulathal’ took place followed by ghatadeepa harathi and karpoora harathi at Tondaradipodi. Then Perumal went to ‘kanadi-arai mandapam’. After some time Perumal ascended the ‘tholukkuiniyan’ followed by ubhayanachimars in another one. At Andal sannidhi exchange of garlands took place before Perumal returned to aasthanam.
