2nd April (Panguni Sravanam) was the sattrumurai of Manmatha Pallava utsavam at Kanchi Sri Varadaraja Perumal koil. The utsavam started at 10.00 a.m. with tirumanjanam to Varadan His Consorts and Pranatharthihara Varadan the Hero of this utsavam. It was a visual delight to watch the Tirumanjanam and an aural delight to hear His praises when the kattiyam was chanted. After this Theertham, Srisathari and prasada viniyogam took place. The patience with which everyone present is given Theertham/Srisathari with a smiling face is praiseworthy. The way in which maniyakar swami conducts the events meticulously is amazing and deserves an anjali.
Purana Patanam took place followed by the offering of ‘parimalam’ The dhavana mala with a border of pink flowers deserves a mention and the vakula flower mala with colourful flowers at the bottom gave it an appearance of an ornament. The zig-zag pattern of the jasmine shawl and the manner in which Perumal was garlanded deftly deserves mention. Inspite of so many flower strands there were no tangles or untidiness because they adorned The only ‘Perfect Being’. The beds were brought for the Divya Dampathis and They rested till 5.45p.m. when the waking up ceremony took place and the seven screens were removed to the sound of the nadhaswaram playing bhoopala ragam. The swami reading ‘Hasthigiri Mahatmyam ‘ was brought to the dais and offered maryadhai and Varadan’s heavy garland. Swami then finished the reading of the sthala puranam concluding that the Perumal who was worshipped by Brahma and appeared when the ‘vapa homam’ was done was worshipped by Gajendra in Tretha and Devaguru Brihaspathi in Dwaparam. He is being worshipped by Anatha in Kali and is the Bestower of Boons. He gives Saranagathi to the seeker and is ever present in Kanchipuram.
After this Tiruvaradhana took place. In between devotees wet to gopura vasal to have darsan of Yathokthakari Perumal in Chandraprabha casting His coolness on everyone. Devotees returned to the hundredpillar mandapam for Theertham, Srisathari and prasadam. It being Sravanam devotees went to Swami Desikan sannidhi for Theertham, Srisathari and prasadam. It was about 8.30p.m. when Pranatharthihara Varadan emerged in a palanquin and devotees ran along with Him. After Harathi at Tondaradipodi He was taken uphill to Hasthigiri.
Varadan did the rounds of Sannidhi Street before returning to aasthanam.
